"Three Rs Review" Workshop for PSAT Takers

The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the General Education Alliance wishes to thank Morris Gadner and Colin Dube,  program staff at the Auburn Avenue Research Library, in Atlanta, Georgia, for their assistance in hosting the Alliance’s “Three R’s Review” Workshop.  On February 2nd, 9th, & 16th of 2013, from 1-4 p.m., high school juniors from Georgia and North Carolina who had completed the PSAT, gathered at the AARL for corrective reviews of basic skills in critical reading, paragraph writing, and mathematics.  Students who required follow-up sessions, also met with consultants during the week via skype sessions. Each Saturday, especially during breaks, students and the Alliance’s consultants also found time to engage in informal discussions about how to choose a college and a major.

President of General Education Alliance is Guest Speaker at Noel Levitz s 2013 Symposium on the Recruitment and Retention of Students of Color

Hazel Arnett Ervin, President of the HBCU- General Education Alliance, is an invited speaker at Noel Levitz’s   Symposium on the Recruitment and Retention of Students of Color.  The symposium will be held in Savannah, Georgia, on April 15- 17, 2013.  In her speech, “(Re)envisioning How Underrepresented Communities Address Retention,” Ervin interrogates popular strategies being promoted to improve student retention and graduation rates in secondary and higher education.  She questions the role of students, parents and others in underrepresented communities in movements that promote student success and contends that responsibility should lie equally within underrepresented communities.   To empower students and communities, Ervin demonstrates how the Alliance uses contents of major achievement tests to raise among students, parents and others a level of consciousness about what is literacy; to specify gaps in skills foundations which some students must correct; and to advance ways other students might gauge and reinforce academic excellence.
